We have produced a notably diverse body of work around two constant principles: a highly collaborative design approach, and a recognition that buildings and sites themselves collaborate in the making of places. Therefore, we seek an architecture which is expressive and participatory; an architecture that responds to the human needs of habitation; and an architecture that draws on alliances with context, landscape, the arts, and the rhythms of human activity. The results are thoughtful and engaging buildings that create memorable and meaningful places.
Our design process is essentially collaborative, always amplifying and enriching the individual insights of the participants. We begin the design process by listening—through the direct experience of the site and its larger urban context, and the involvement of the building's occupants and users.
While an open and collaborative spirit must always be balanced with real leadership, we have seen again and again that our work has been enriched by the significant participation of clients and users, as well as our consultants. Our collaborative working style has evolved into highly articulated strategies for the intimate participation of clients in design.
From our early work through current planning and building design across the country and abroad, we have drawn on the strength of familiar regional architecture and the special character of each site. We have developed in the process an equally keen interest in the goals and visions of our clients, seeking to bring their ideas into design at every stage, and enhance the mission of the building.
Our experience has fostered a design approach that places value on richness and diversity, in which we have been able to resolve conflicts without compromise.
