Our design goals are to create a welcoming, comfortable, state-of-the-art museum for visitors and staff, enhancing the special ‘sense of place’ that is Fieldcote by integrating the building with the site and minimizing disturbance to the landscape. A new entrance terrace covered by a pergola and surrounded by planting beds and a small pond invites gathering and lingering. The addition will add museum quality gallery, archive and artifact space, mostly concealed beneath the existing hill in an earth sheltered wing with a green roof and lit by skylights.
New multi-purpose spaces will enhance programming and events, and spill onto a generous stone terrace at grade.
The addition is inspired by the existing house and gardens, designed for harmony and to convey a sense of belonging and to ensure the fit of new and old. The additions maintain a discreet presence in scale with the existing building, while adding richness and identity and adding generous glazing to be accessible and connect with the powerful gardens
Our approach reflects concern for ‘green building’ principles, environmental stewardship and energy efficiency, and the new building will be fully accessible to all persons with disabilities
Our aim is to transcend the ordinary to create a dynamic, inviting and innovative building.
